More tips to keep the doctor away 1

Sometimes, an apple a day is not anough to keep the doctor away...

Given that it has been raining hard in Manila the past few days (that’s quite an understatement, really), I hope everyone is safe and dry. Blame it on the weather, but a lot of people I know are down with a bug of sorts, so aside from the requisite Vitamin C and “an apple a day,” I’m sharing some tips given by my immunologist Dr. Manuel Canlas to help boost your immune system: 

1. Try Probiotics – Probiotics are good bacteria that aid in digestion and help kill bad bacteria. Dr. Canlas recommends “live cultures,”  not the ones in powder or capsule form, as they are more potent. You can find them in plain yoghurt (avoid ones with too much fruits and jellies please) or Yakult. You can take this as often as twice a day for best results. For more nutritional benefits, a good friend takes her yoghurt with a tablespoon of Chia seeds, a superfood rich in Omega-3 fatty acids.

2. Take a garlic tablet – taken once a day, it helps boost your immune system and blood circulation.

3. Gargle with salt – like us, bacteria also loves the sweet stuff. Notice how sometimes your throat gets itchy after eating too much chocolate or candy? Salt washes away bacteria feeding on the lining of your throat. This is especially helpful when you have colds or cough. 1/2 teaspoon dissolved in warm water will do the trick.
